Grand Theft Auto VI: What Rockstar Has Said, Against GTA V
GTA VI as Rockstar describes it, line by line against GTA V: setting, leads, platforms, online, ratings, price and the reveal-to-launch gap.
Last checked: Oct 11 2026, 39 days before launch.
Grand Theft Auto VI is the first new numbered GTA since GTA V in 2013. Most pages about it mix what Rockstar has said with what fans hope. This one does the opposite. It sets Rockstar's own description of VI next to Rockstar's own description of V, line by line, so you can see what has actually changed. The short version: a new state, two leads instead of three, a game that launches single-player only, and a public wait 396 days longer than GTA V's.

What is counted, and how
Every GTA VI fact on this page comes from a Rockstar page, a Take-Two filing, a PlayStation or Xbox store listing, or our fact base (FACTS.md), which records the source and date of each item. GTA V facts come from Rockstar's current GTA V page, Rockstar's own 2011 to 2013 YouTube uploads, and a 2013 press release reprinted by Engadget.
What we left out: anything from leaked footage, map-size claims, first-person mode, and reporters' impressions from hands-off previews. Those sit in the rumor table at the end, with their sources.
The arithmetic, shown once:
- GTA V launch (Sep 17 2013) to GTA VI launch (Nov 19 2026): 13 years, 2 months and 2 days, or 4,811 days.
- GTA V reveal trailer (Nov 2 2011) to GTA V launch: 685 days.
- GTA VI Trailer 1 (Dec 4 2023) to GTA VI launch: 1,081 days. That is 396 days, or about 58 percent, longer than GTA V's public run-up (1,081 minus 685 is 396; 396 divided by 685 is 0.578).

The setup
Rockstar's synopsis is short. Jason and Lucia "have always known the deck is stacked against them." When an easy score goes wrong, they end up on "the darkest side of the sunniest place in America," caught in a criminal conspiracy that runs across Leonida, and they have to rely on each other to get out alive. That is the whole official premise, and we go no further than Rockstar has. The two leads have their own page: Lucia and Jason.
Rockstar calls the game "the biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet." It used that phrase when Trailer 1 came out in Dec 2023, and nearly the same words ("the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet") when An Extended Look came out in Aug 2026. The setting is Vice City, USA, inside a fictional state called Leonida, with six named regions. Our Leonida page covers each one.
What it changed: GTA V and GTA VI, side by side
This is the table no other page has, because it uses only each game's own official wording.
| Item | GTA V (2013) | GTA VI (2026) | What changed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Setting | Los Santos and Blaine County (Rockstar GTA V page) | Vice City and the state of Leonida (rockstargames.com/VI) | A new state. Vice City last starred in GTA Vice City and Vice City Stories. |
| Number of leads | Three: Michael, Franklin and Trevor (Rockstar trailer title, Apr 30 2013) | Two: Jason and Lucia | One fewer lead. GTA V's three were all men; one of VI's two is a woman. |
| How the leads relate, in Rockstar's words | They "can trust nobody - least of all each other" | They are "forced to rely on each other more than ever" | From distrust to dependence |
| Launch platforms | PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 (Jan 31 2013 release) | PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S | Current-generation consoles only |
| PC at launch | No. PC came later. | No. Not announced. | Same console-first pattern. See PC tracker. |
| Online at launch | GTA Online "free with every retail copy," launching Oct 1 2013, 14 days after the game (Rockstar video, Aug 15 2013) | "a single player experience." No online mode, date or price announced. | Biggest structural change |
| Interactive element on Rockstar's rating box | "In-Game Purchases, Users Interact" (GTA V page today) | "In-Game Purchases" only | No "Users Interact" line, which fits single-player |
| ESRB content descriptors | Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol (ESRB box on Rockstar's GTA V page) | The same seven, word for word, on the PlayStation Store and Xbox Store listings and Rockstar's VI site | No change |
| Announced release-date moves | One: spring 2013 to Sep 17 2013 | Two: 2025 to May 26 2026, then to Nov 19 2026 | One more delay. See delay timeline. |
| Reveal to launch | 685 days | 1,081 days | 396 days longer |
| Radio | In-vehicle stations (see our radio page) | Six stations named so far, plus on-demand podcasts, heard in cars and on foot through in-game headphones | Rockstar calls the podcasts a first for the series |
| US price | Special Edition $79.99 (Game Informer, May 23 2013) | Standard Edition $79.99; Ultimate $99.99 | GTA VI's base price equals GTA V's 2013 Special Edition price |
| Physical copy | Disc (2013 retail) | Code in the box, no disc (Rockstar Support) | See preload and physical copy |
Two caveats on the table. First, the GTA V rating box is the one on Rockstar's GTA V page today, which covers the current version that ships with GTA Online. It is not a scan of the 2013 box. Second, we have no primary source for GTA V's 2013 standard-edition price, so the price row compares GTA V's Special Edition only.
The row that matters most is online. Every GTA V buyer in 2013 got GTA Online two weeks after launch, and that mode is still being updated: Take-Two's Aug 7 2026 release lists a GTA Online summer update dated Jul 14 2026. For VI, Rockstar's only words are "a single player experience." In Sep 2026, Take-Two's CEO reportedly said the company does not expect recurrent consumer spending from the initial launch. Anyone who tells you what GTA VI Online will be is guessing. The full list of open questions is on confirmed vs rumor.
What else Rockstar has confirmed
- Plays best on PS5. The VI site carries a "Plays Best On PlayStation 5" badge, and the PlayStation Store lists "PS5 Pro Enhanced."
- Thirteen languages. The Rockstar Store lists English, French, Italian, German, Russian, Japanese, Polish, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Spanish (Mexico), Spanish (Spain) and Portuguese (Brazil).
- Two editions. Standard and Ultimate, plus a $20.00 upgrade. Our editions and platforms page has the details.
- Radio. Six stations revealed on Oct 8 2026: Cocoteo FM, Back Country Radio, AfroBank FM, The Chamber 106.6, Flash FM and Dirty South Classics. Rockstar calls it "the biggest and widest-ranging selection of in-game radio yet." A 34-track album, Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album, comes out the same day as the game. Our radio stations page covers the series.
- No published file size. As of Oct 11 2026, no Rockstar page or store listing gives one.
Reception so far
There are no reviews yet, so "reception" means the response to the marketing. Trailer 1 drew 90,421,491 YouTube views in its first 24 hours, a Guinness World Record for a video game reveal. Rockstar told The Hollywood Reporter that Trailer 2 reached 475 million views across all platforms in 24 hours. That is Rockstar's own number, and nobody has audited it. When Trailer 1 came out, GamesRadar called Lucia the series' "very first female protagonist." Every figure, with its date, is on our trailers page.
Take-Two has tied its money forecast to the game. Its Aug 7 2026 release projects fiscal 2027 net bookings of $8.0 to $8.2 billion and cites "excitement around the November 19th launch." Late in Aug 2026, IGN and other outlets watched about 30 minutes of hands-off play. What they reported is their impression, not Rockstar's word, so we do not print it as fact.
Legacy, so far
It is too early for a legacy. Here is what we can say. GTA VI is the first numbered entry since 2013, and the gap is 4,811 days. Our release dates and series timeline pages list every earlier gap for comparison. Its sales will be compared against GTA V's record, which our sales history page tracks. The first real numbers will come in Take-Two's results after launch, not from analysts.
Rumor table (not confirmed)
None of this is official. We list it so you can recognize it, not because we believe it.
| Claim | Status, Oct 11 2026 | Source of the claim |
|---|---|---|
| A GTA VI online mode at launch, or sold separately later | Unconfirmed. Rockstar says only "single player experience." | TweakTown, analysts |
| Map is "3x Red Dead 2" | Secondhand, from a YouTuber's account of previews | VICE, Aug 28 2026 |
| First-person mode | Unconfirmed either way | GTABoom |
| 45 million or more sold on day one | Analyst prediction | Wccftech |
Trivia
- The Trailer 1 Newswire post is dated Dec 5 2023, but the video went up on Rockstar's YouTube channel at 3:07 p.m. Pacific on Dec 4. Rockstar released it early after a leak.
- Jason's personal pistol in the Ultimate Edition is a Girardi ES9. Lucia's is a Klose K17. That is from the PlayStation Store copy.
- One Ultimate Edition revolver pair is described as "sourced from the Vercetti Estate." The Vercetti name ties back to Tommy Vercetti of the 2002 game.
- Lucia's profile says her mother's dreams date from "their days in Liberty City," so the series' Liberty City is part of her backstory. Rockstar has not said that Liberty City is playable.
