GTA 6 Gameplay Features: Everything Rockstar Has Confirmed

What Rockstar's own copy confirms about GTA 6 gameplay, kept apart from what Game Informer and IGN reported from Rockstar previews in Aug to Oct 2026.

Last checked: Oct 12 2026. GTA 6 is out Nov 19 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Five weeks out, Rockstar still has not published a feature list. Game Informer said as much on Aug 27, noting that Rockstar had yet to plainly detail the game's features. So what do we actually know about how GTA 6 plays?

More than you might think. Rockstar's own copy, spread across its GTA VI site, Newswire and store listings, confirms a good handful of things. Then there is a bigger pile: what Rockstar North's Rob Nelson told IGN during a 30-minute hands-off demo, and what Game Informer learned for its Sep 29 2026 cover story.

This page keeps those two piles apart. The CONFIRMED section uses only Rockstar's own words (plus PlayStation's copy for PS5 features). The REPORT section is what reputable outlets reported, credited to them. Nothing here comes from leaked footage.

CONFIRMED: what Rockstar's own copy says

Everything in this section comes from pages Rockstar wrote: rockstargames.com/VI, the Newswire, and the Ultimate Edition and pre-order text Rockstar supplies to the PlayStation and Xbox stores. We read all of them on Oct 12 2026.

Two protagonists, one story

Rockstar's synopsis is the same everywhere: Jason and Lucia, an easy score that goes wrong, and a criminal conspiracy across Leonida that forces them "to rely on each other more than ever." The character pages give each a background. Jason grew up around grifters, served in the Army and ended up working for drug runners in the Keys. Lucia's father taught her to fight, and fighting for her family put her in the Leonida Penitentiary. Our Lucia and Jason page has the full profiles.

Rockstar's copy describes them as a pair throughout. It does not, on any page we read, describe how you control them or whether you swap between them. That detail comes from previews, below.

A single-player game, told in chapters

Both stores carry Rockstar's line: "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience." PlayStation's FAQ gives the same answer to "Does Grand Theft Auto VI have any multiplayer modes?" For the online question in full, see does GTA VI have online?

The Ultimate Edition copy says its bonuses arrive across the story, "with new items uncovered behind each chapter." The Vintage Vice City Pack copy adds that its items become available "as their story progresses." So the story is split into chapters, and some content unlocks as you move through it.

What the Ultimate and pre-order copy reveals about play

Rockstar's store text sells bonus items, but it quietly confirms several activities and systems:

  • Fencing stolen goods. Two garages, the Paradise Garage in Watson Bay and the Shore Court garage near Ocean Beach, come with a weapon locker and "a secure place to deposit stolen goods to be fenced."
  • Raids. The PTT Youngin$ Compound mission has you raid a Southside Vice City gang compound "and escape safely to score some special items and distinct contraband."
  • Fishing. The Shitzu Squalo boat is "perfect for casting in Gambit Bay and reeling in catches of all sorts."
  • Car restoration. The Classic Car Collection, a commission from a fixer named Wyman, has you track down abandoned project cars and restore them.
  • Vehicle customization. Rideout Customs does interiors, rims and "donk stylings"; One-Eyed Willie's on Lake Leonida does off-road mods and hand-painted work.
  • Appearance. Salons offer facial hair for Jason and makeup and nails for Lucia. Electric Fang offers over 50 tattoos designed by the artist collective FAILE. Stock 305 sells streetwear.
  • Signature weapons. Jason carries a Girardi ES9 pistol and Lucia a Klose K17.
  • Getting around. Jason's safehouse vehicles are a Dinka Enduro motorcycle and a Crest Kayak; the '67 Dominator Buggy is built for "the backwoods of Mount Kalaga."

One caution: those five shops (Rideout Customs, Sara's Unisex Salon, Stock 305, Electric Fang and One-Eyed Willie's) are "only open for business" with the Ultimate Edition. The copy confirms that customization exists. It does not say what the Standard Edition's own shops offer. Our vehicles and weapons page lists every vehicle Rockstar has named.

Jobs and crews, from the character pages

Rockstar's character copy hints at the kind of work the story is built on. Raul Bautista is "a seasoned bank robber" recruiting talent, and his crew will "have to double down" as the stakes rise. Brian Heder lets Jason live rent-free at one of his properties as long as he helps with "local shakedowns." Boobie Ike and Dre'Quan Priest run Only Raw Records. Every character Rockstar has profiled is on our characters page.

Phones, radio and podcasts

Rockstar's Oct 8 2026 radio post is the clearest gameplay statement it has made. For the first time in the series, there are on-demand podcasts. Radio and podcasts work in vehicles and on foot, through "newly introduced headphones and earbuds connected to their smartphones." Rockstar also calls this the biggest and widest-ranging radio selection yet, and promises more on the game's "dynamic score." Stations and hosts are on our GTA VI radio stations page.

Social media in the world

Rockstar's copy makes social media part of Leonida. Real Dimez built their name on rap tracks and "a relentless social media presence," with the tagline "Viral videos. Viral hooks." The PTT Youngin$ are one of the city's "most socially active gangs." That confirms social media is in the world. Whether you use it yourself is a preview report, below.

The world, the footage and PS5 features

The setting is the state of Leonida and Vice City, with six regions on Rockstar's site; our GTA 6 map and Leonida pages cover them. Rockstar says the Aug 27 2026 Extended Look was "captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5."

PlayStation's own game page (Sony's copy, not Rockstar's) lists Tempest 3D Audio, fast loading from the PS5 SSD, haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and effects through the controller speaker. It also says the game is PS5 Pro Enhanced and not playable on PS4.

REPORT: what previews and Game Informer reported

Everything below is reported by an outlet. Where a Rockstar developer is quoted, the quote is the outlet's transcription. These are not Rockstar store or Newswire statements, and features can change before launch.

Game Informer's cover story, Sep 29 2026

Game Informer's 14-page cover story in issue 382 came from interviews with Rockstar's lead designers and 12 new screenshots, written by Marcus Stewart. The full story is for subscribers; we read only the free articles. Game Informer reported:

  • Over 170 animal species across land, air and sea, several never seen in a Rockstar game. Examples include flamingos, manatees, pelicans and alligators, plus invasive green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats and rhesus macaques.
  • Animals you can track, sorted as Rare, Discoverable and Legendary, with the identities kept secret.
  • New animal rendering: iridescence, bioluminescence, translucency, feather types and new hair and fur systems.
  • Weather: dynamic cloudscapes and localized storms, so you can stand in sun and watch rain fall in the distance. Puddles persist after rain, and rainbows can appear after a shower.
  • Tropical storms and hurricanes. Game Informer says it does not yet know how often they happen or how they affect play.
  • People: a caption in the feature says NPCs have more diverse body types and distinct physical features.

Game Informer on the Extended Look, Aug 27 2026

Watching Rockstar's official video, Game Informer reported that you can switch between the two leads, with an AI-controlled Lucia giving covering fire. It saw a weapon wheel, a 4-star wanted level and a mini-map that draws buildings in 3D, and noted a slow-motion moment it could not call cinematic or gameplay. Activities it spotted included fishing, kayaking, base jumping, scuba diving, jet skiing, airboating, backyard wrestling and several kinds of racing. A second Game Informer list added weightlifting, a shooting range and basketball, with a fair warning: "we don't yet know if all of them are actually playable."

IGN's demo with Rob Nelson, Aug 27 and Oct 7 2026

IGN's Rachel Weber watched Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson play 30 minutes of GTA 6. IGN published the preview on Aug 27 2026 and the full interview transcript on Oct 7 2026. This is the most detailed account of the game's systems so far.

  • Switching. Nelson said Rockstar kept switching "as open as possible," with some story moments where it is not allowed. The other character has a routine, so you may find them at the safehouse or out.
  • Relationship. Spending time together, from robberies to kayaking, builds the couple's bond, and Nelson said it will bear on how their story plays out. IGN's preview says the system is optional and brings no gameplay benefit.
  • Criminal Profile. A new system tracking what kind of criminal you are, separate from the relationship, which can change how the world and story react. Nelson said there is no right or wrong way to play.
  • Wanted and heat. Per Nelson, a crime must be witnessed or trip an alarm to be reported. Police get a description of your car, clothes and whether you are a couple, so changing any of those helps.
  • Car theft. Some parked cars need tools you earn through the story, such as a key cloner for electronic locks. Some have trackers. A phone scanner app shows a car's locks, alarm, tracker and value. You can still carjack any driver.
  • Money and robberies. Nelson said money matters more than in past games, with times you must earn it to move the story on. He said you can "rob pretty much anything," alone or as a pair, and sell goods to a fence.
  • Daily life. Safehouses closer to Red Dead Redemption 2's camps; gyms that raise strength, with weight gain from overeating; texting and calling your partner; a "Focus" mode like Red Dead's Eagle Eye; studying animals as a collection.
  • Social media. IGN writes that social media returns in a big way, with Jason and Lucia able to lurk and doomscroll.

Trivia

  • Nelson told IGN that the game's density is part of the reason the team has doubled in size.
  • The Vintage Vice City Pack's weapon pattern is, in Rockstar's words, inspired by Tommy Vercetti's "iconic palm tree button-up."
