GTA VI Pre-Load and the Physical Copy: What to Know
Pre-load opens Nov 12 at local midnight. The physical copy is a download code in a box, no disc. What that means for buyers, the Upgrade, and storage.
Last checked: Oct 11 2026. This page is kept live. On Nov 12, when pre-load opens and the real download size becomes visible, we will add it here with the platform and the time we saw it.
Two facts drive everything on this page:
- Pre-load starts Nov 12 2026 at local midnight. That is one week before launch on Nov 19.
- The physical copy is a download code in a box. There is no disc. Rockstar Store's wording: "Physical versions will only contain a download code inside the box to support pre-load on November 12."
Put those together and the practical result is simple. Whether you buy digital or physical, you download the whole game. The only questions are when you can start, how much space you need, and what you give up by choosing the box.

What is counted, and how
We use Rockstar's support page, the Rockstar Store, and the PlayStation and Xbox listings. "Local midnight" is Rockstar's own wording for pre-load, from its support page. Rockstar has not published a per-platform pre-load hour, so we do not print one.
The only launch time we have seen on a store is on the US PlayStation Store. It shows Nov 19 at 05:00 AM UTC, which is 12:00 AM Eastern Standard Time (UTC minus 5 hours in November). We have not seen a launch time on the Xbox Store or on other countries' stores.
Nothing below about file size is official. It sits in a labeled rumor table.

The week from Nov 12 to Nov 19
This is our buyer's calendar, built from the dated facts above.
| Date | What happens | Digital buyer | Physical buyer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Now to Nov 11 | Pre-orders open | Pre-order on PS Store, Xbox Store or Rockstar Store | Pre-order from a retailer or the Rockstar Store |
| Nov 12, local midnight | Pre-load opens | Start the download | The box ships from this date. The download can start once the code is redeemed |
| Nov 12 | The real file size becomes visible | Check free space | Check free space before redeeming |
| Nov 12 to 18 | 7-day pre-load window | Let the download finish | Same, once the code arrives |
| Nov 19, 12:00 AM EST (US PlayStation) | Launch | Play | Play |
| Nov 19, 23:59:59 | Last moment for the Vintage Vice City Pack ("before Nov 20") | Applies | Applies |
The gap from pre-load to launch is exactly 7 days (Nov 12 to Nov 19), which matches PlayStation's "7-Day Pre-load" label.
What this means if your box is late. The download is the same size either way, so a physical copy that arrives on Nov 18 gives you one day to download instead of seven. If launch-day play matters to you and your connection is slow, a digital copy removes that risk, and so does a box that arrives close to Nov 12.
What "code in a box" means for physical buyers
| Question | Digital | Physical | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Is there a disc? | No | No | Rockstar Store |
| Do you download the full game? | Yes | Yes | follows from no disc |
| Price (US, Standard) | $79.99 | $79.99 | Rockstar Store; Xbox Store |
| Vintage Vice City Pack before Nov 20 | Yes | Yes | Rockstar Support |
| One month of GTA+ | Yes | No | Rockstar Support; Rockstar Store |
| Ultimate Edition available | Yes ($99.99) | No. Buy the $20.00 Upgrade digitally after redeeming the code | Rockstar Support; Xbox Store |
| Region rules | PlayStation codes locked to the region of purchase; Xbox codes not region-locked | Same | Rockstar Support |
| Japanese codes | Expire 170 days after Nov 19 2026 (May 8 2027 by our count) | Same | Rockstar Support |
The Ultimate route for physical buyers. There is no Ultimate box. If you want the Ultimate content on a physical copy, you redeem the code first, then buy the Ultimate Edition Upgrade from your platform's store. At today's US prices that is $79.99 plus $20.00, or $99.99, the same as digital Ultimate. What you do not get is the GTA+ month that digital pre-orders include. Our editions page compares every buying route.
Region-locked PlayStation codes. If you buy a PlayStation box abroad or from an import seller, the code only works on an account in the region where it was bought. Xbox codes are not region-locked. Rockstar Support lists the PlayStation regions.
What we do not know
| Question | Status as of Oct 11 2026 | When it should be answered |
|---|---|---|
| File size | UNCONFIRMED. No official figure | Nov 12, when pre-load opens |
| Exact pre-load hour per platform | Only "local midnight" is official | Nov 12 |
| Launch time outside the US PlayStation Store | Not published on the listings we read | Store listings, or Nov 19 |
| Whether a physical copy can be resold or traded in after the code is used | Not addressed on the Rockstar pages we read | Rockstar or retailer terms |
| Whether there is a day-one patch | Not announced | Launch |
RUMOR: file size
| Claim | Where it came from | Status | What would confirm it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 150 to 300 GB | Fan estimates reported by IBTimes | RUMOR, UNCONFIRMED | The pre-load on Nov 12 |
| 150 to 200 GB plus a 20 to 50 GB patch | The author's own estimate in GTABoom's pre-load guide, not a reported figure (file size page) | RUMOR, UNCONFIRMED | The pre-load on Nov 12 |
| 676.7 GB | A parody account | False origin. Ignore it | n/a |
None of these numbers comes from Rockstar, Sony or Microsoft. We will not tell you how much space to clear based on a guess. What we can say from the facts: the download is the same for digital and physical buyers, and the true size becomes visible on Nov 12, a full week before launch. That is the day to check your free space.
Practical checklist
- Before Nov 12: pre-order, digital or physical. If you want the Vintage Vice City Pack, order before Nov 20. If you want the GTA+ month, it must be digital.
- Nov 12: pre-load opens at local midnight. Check the real size and your free space.
- Physical buyers: redeem the code as soon as the box arrives. If you want Ultimate content, buy the Upgrade after redeeming.
- Nov 19: launch. On the US PlayStation Store, 12:00 AM EST.
For what the game is, see GTA VI. For how we got to Nov 19, see the delay timeline.
Trivia
- Both pre-load day and launch day fall on a Thursday: Nov 12 and Nov 19 2026.
- The PlayStation Store lists the game as "Offline play enabled". The physical copy still needs the download, so plan the first install with a connection.
- The pre-order post that set the Nov 12 pre-load also called GTA VI "a single player experience" (Rockstar Newswire, Jun 24 2026).
