Every GTA release date, by platform and region
Every Grand Theft Auto release from 1997 to GTA VI in one table, dated from Rockstar and Take-Two records, with the months between main games worked out.
Most release-date lists give one date per game. Grand Theft Auto has almost never launched on every platform, or in every region, on the same day, and the publisher's own records disagree by days. This page dates every release we could from Rockstar or Take-Two paperwork, names the record behind each date, lists where those records conflict, and works out the gaps between main games up to GTA VI on November 19, 2026.

What is counted, and how
Sources, in order of trust. Day-level dates come first from Take-Two's SEC filings (10-K and 10-Q product tables and earnings releases) and from Rockstar press releases that Take-Two hosts on its investor site. Next come Rockstar's own Newswire and game pages. Where a filing gives only a month, the table gives only a month. We did not fill a day in from fan wikis.
Planned versus actual. Some dates were announced in advance and then moved. The table marks those "(announced)" when we found no later record of the actual day. Take-Two's quarterly pipeline tables also list planned dates that never happened, such as GTA V on PC for January 27, 2015 and then March 24, 2015. Those are left out of the master table. The PC version shipped April 14, 2015.
What is left out. The table leaves out mobile ports of the PS2-era games, PlayStation 2 Classics re-releases and London 1961, the free PC add-on for the first game, which no Rockstar or Take-Two record we found dates. Game Boy Color and Dreamcast versions of the 2D games appear on Rockstar's platform lists without a dated record, so they get no row.
Arithmetic for the gaps. A gap is counted from the first release of one main entry to the first release of the next. For the day-level dates, whole months are counted first, then the leftover days. For the 1997 and 1999 games only a month is on record, so those gaps are month to month.

Why the dates disagree
The same game can carry three different dates depending on who you ask. These are the conflicts we found inside Rockstar's and Take-Two's own records.
| Game | Rockstar record | Take-Two record | Possible reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto | May 1, 1998 (game page) | Nov 1997 international, Jun 1998 North America | Unexplained; Rockstar's page gives one date, matching neither month in the filing, for a game that shipped in two regions seven months apart |
| Grand Theft Auto 2 | Oct 27, 1999 (game page) | Oct 1999 | Month only in the filing; the day is unconfirmed |
| Vice City | Oct 27, 2002 (game page) | Oct 29, 2002 North America | Unexplained; Oct 29 is also the date of Rockstar's own "has shipped" announcement and the date GameSpot lists |
| Episodes from Liberty City | Oct 9, 2009 (game page) | Oct 29, 2009 press release | Unexplained; the press release is dated the day of launch |
| GTA IV: Complete Edition | Oct 27, 2010 ("now available" release) | Oct 26, 2010 (10-K) | Unexplained; one day apart |
| Trilogy Definitive Edition, physical | n/a | Announced Dec 7, released Dec 17, 2021 | The physical date slipped after the November earnings release |
| GTA V on PC | n/a | Apr 14, 2015 (Steam shows Apr 13) | Not stated; the same one-day offset shows for Episodes from Liberty City on Steam, which may point to how the storefront records dates |
The practical rule: for anything before 2008, use the filing month and treat any single day as a North American date unless a region is named.
The gaps between main entries
| From | To | Dates used | Working | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GTA | GTA 2 | Nov 1997 to Oct 1999 | 2 years = 24 months, minus 1 month (Nov to Oct) | 23 months |
| GTA 2 | GTA III | Oct 1999 to Oct 2001 | 2 years | 24 months |
| GTA III | Vice City | Oct 22, 2001 to Oct 29, 2002 | 12 months to Oct 22, 2002, plus 7 days | 12 months, 7 days |
| Vice City | San Andreas | Oct 29, 2002 to Oct 26, 2004 | 23 months to Sep 29, 2004, plus 27 days | 23 months, 27 days |
| San Andreas | GTA IV | Oct 26, 2004 to Apr 29, 2008 | 3 years 6 months = 42 months to Apr 26, 2008, plus 3 days | 42 months, 3 days |
| GTA IV | GTA V | Apr 29, 2008 to Sep 17, 2013 | 5 years 4 months = 64 months to Aug 29, 2013, plus 19 days | 64 months, 19 days |
| GTA V | GTA VI | Sep 17, 2013 to Nov 19, 2026 | 13 years 2 months = 158 months to Nov 17, 2026, plus 2 days | 158 months, 2 days |
In days, the last five gaps are 372, 728, 1,281, 1,967 and 4,811.
Two patterns stand out. First, the PS2 years ran on an annual rhythm that no later generation repeated: three main games and two PSP games launched in five of the six Octobers from 2001 to 2006. Second, each HD-era gap is longer than the one before it. GTA VI's 158-month gap is about two and a half times GTA IV to GTA V (158 divided by 64 is 2.47).
GTA VI's gap was meant to be shorter. Trailer 1 (December 2023) gave a 2025 window; Rockstar then set May 26, 2026, which would have made the gap 152 months and 9 days, before moving to November 19, 2026, 177 days later (see the delay timeline).
Platform lag, game by game
The table also shows how long the console-first habit has run. The figures below use the first platform's date and the first PC or new-generation date in the master table.
| Game | First release | Later version | Lag |
|---|---|---|---|
| GTA III | PS2, Oct 2001 | PC, May 2002 | 7 months |
| Vice City | PS2, Oct 2002 | PC, May 2003 | 7 months |
| San Andreas | PS2, Oct 26, 2004 | PC and Xbox, Jun 7, 2005 | 7 months, 12 days |
| GTA IV | Consoles, Apr 29, 2008 | PC, Dec 2, 2008 | 7 months, 3 days |
| GTA V | PS3 and 360, Sep 17, 2013 | PC, Apr 14, 2015 | 18 months, 28 days |
| GTA V | PS3 and 360, Sep 17, 2013 | PS5 and Series X|S, Mar 15, 2022 | 101 months, 26 days |
For four games running, the PC version followed in about seven months. GTA V broke that pattern, mostly because it went to PS4 and Xbox One first. GTA VI has no PC version announced at all; our PC release tracker follows that question.
Trivia
- Take-Two's fiscal 2006 10-K lists Vice City Stories on PSP in October 2006 and Liberty City Stories on PS2 in June 2006 in its release list. Its best-sellers table in the same filing gives the two the other way round: Liberty City Stories PS2 "October 2006" and Vice City Stories PSP "June 2006."
- Rockstar's April 2008 GTA IV release called it the first next-generation GTA and said it was "now available worldwide." No earlier main entry had a single worldwide day in the records we found.
- The Episodes from Liberty City disc did not need a copy of GTA IV or an internet connection, Rockstar's October 29, 2009 release said.
