GTA Sales History: Every GTA V Sell-In Figure, 2013-2026

Every GTA V and series sell-in figure Take-Two put in an SEC filing from 2013 to Aug 2026, dated, with the filing named and the arithmetic shown.

Every sales number here comes from a Take-Two SEC filing or from Guinness World Records, with no estimates and no tracking sites. Read in order, the filings show one thing clearly: GTA V now accounts for close to half of all Grand Theft Auto units ever sold in.

What is counted, and how

Sell-in, not sell-through. Take-Two reports units "sold-in": copies shipped to retailers plus digital sales, not copies bought by players and never a player count. Guinness's 24-hour figures measure first-day sales.

"Over" means a floor. Take-Two's 10-Q and 10-K filings give GTA V in steps of 5 million, with "over", "more than" or "nearly" in front. Any difference between two such floors is approximate, and this page says so each time.

Where each number lives. Until 2018 the GTA V figure was usually in the quarterly earnings release (8-K, exhibit 99.1). From late 2018 it sits in the business description of each 10-Q and 10-K, next to the series total. Dates are filing dates, not the dates a milestone was crossed. Left out: lifetime figures for older GTA titles (these filings do not give them) and any press figure that disagrees with a filing.

Jul 27 2026DEF 14A proxynearly 230 million
Aug 7 202610-Qover 230 million

Two things in this table are worth knowing.

  • The missing word. The three 10-Qs from Aug 2023 to Feb 2024 say GTA V "has sold-in over 180 units", then 185 and 190, with "million" dropped. The series line in the same filings reads "over 400 units", 410 and 415. The 10-Ks on either side use "million", so we read these as drafting errors, but quote them as filed.
  • Two figures for one date. The May 22 2024 10-K says over 195 million. The Jul 25 2024 proxy says GTA V had "sold-in approximately 200 million units" as of the end of fiscal 2024. Both hold only if the real figure sat just under 200 million.

How fast the milestones came

Time from launch (Sep 17 2013) to the first filing that reported each figure. The real crossing came earlier.

MilestoneFirst filing that reported itTime after launch
29 millionOct 29 201342 days
50 million ("nearly 52")May 18 20151 year, 8 months, 1 day
100 millionNov 8 20185 years, 1 month, 22 days
150 millionAug 3 20217 years, 10 months, 17 days
200 millionAug 9 202410 years, 10 months, 23 days
230 millionAug 7 202612 years, 10 months, 21 days

Arithmetic for the first row: Sep 17 to Sep 30 2013 is 13 days, plus 29 days of October, is 42 days. The first 100 million took about 5.1 years; the next 100 million took about 5.75 more (Nov 8 2018 to Aug 9 2024).

The annual 10-Ks show the pace barely fading. GTA V added about 20 million units in each of the years to May 2020, 2021 and 2023, and about 15 million in each of the years to May 2022, 2024, 2025 and 2026 (for example, 225 - 210 = 15 million between the May 2025 and May 2026 10-Ks). A game still adding about 15 million units a year more than a decade after launch is the headline number here.

GTA V's share of the whole series

The business description gives the series total and GTA V in the same sentence. Subtracting one from the other gives everything else the series has sold in. Both are floors, so the result can move by a few million either way, which is why the "everything else" column dips in 2019. The 2015 and 2017 rows come from investor presentations filed as 8-K exhibits.

May 20 2025 10-Kover 445 millionover 210 million235 million47.2%
May 22 2026 10-Kover 465 millionover 225 million240 million48.4%
Aug 7 2026 10-Qover 470 millionover 230 million240 million48.9%

Worked example for the last row: 470 - 230 = 240 million; 230 / 470 = 0.489, or 48.9%.

Another way to see it: the series stood at over 128 million in the last filing before GTA V (10-Q, Jul 31 2013) and over 470 million on Aug 7 2026. That is about 470 - 128 = 342 million units added since GTA V launched, of which GTA V is about 230 million. The other roughly 342 - 230 = 112 million came from every other GTA product over the same thirteen years. Take-Two does not break that figure down by title.

Two oddities in the series total

The series figure does not always go up. The May 24 2017 10-K says over 260 million, the next 10-Q (Aug 3 2017) over 255 million, and an investor presentation two weeks later (Aug 16 2017) over 265 million. The filings do not show which was the slip. And the jump from over 128 million (10-Q, Jul 31 2013) to over 150 million (10-Q, Oct 30 2013) is about 150 - 128 = 22 million in one quarter, which fits GTA V's "nearly 29 million" only roughly, because both series figures are floors.

Trivia

  • Take-Two's Oct 29 2013 release said the first 29 million already beat GTA IV's lifetime console sell-in (/library/gta-iv).
  • Guinness's Oct 8 2013 article says six records in its headline and opening, then lists seven.
  • Take-Two's 2020 and 2021 proxies cite the NPD Group: GTA V was "the best-selling game of the past decade" in the US, by units and dollar sales.
