OPINIONIs the GTA 6 Ultimate Edition Worth It? Our Verdict

Opinion: is GTA 6 Ultimate worth the step up from Standard? Argued from the store listings, the $20 Upgrade and the unknowns, with a call per player.

Opinion: this is the desk's call, argued from the store listings. Tell us yours on the forum.

This is an argument, not a buyer's guide. The facts under it are all from Rockstar's own store copy and the console listings, and they are sourced below. The reading of those facts is ours.

Our short answer: for most players, not on day one. Buy Standard, play a few chapters, and add the $20.00 Upgrade if you want it. On Xbox, that route costs you nothing extra. There are three exceptions, though, and one of them is anybody buying on PlayStation this week. Here is the case.

What is counted, and how

We read the US Xbox and PlayStation listings and the Rockstar Store on Oct 12 2026. The Ultimate contents are Rockstar's own copy as shown on the Xbox Store, which lists 16 lines. Non-US price gaps come from our price by country page, read on the same day. Rockstar Support's editions article did not load for us on Oct 12, so its rules (no physical Ultimate, the Upgrade "at any time") come from our fact base, which read it on Oct 11.

Per-item figures are our arithmetic: $20.00 divided by 16 lines is $1.25 a line. That is a way to picture the price, not a claim that each line is worth the same.

What the $20 actually buys

Rockstar's list is long, so we sorted it. This table is ours.

TypeLinesWhat Rockstar lists
Vehicles5'95 Grotti Cheetah; Shitzu Squalo watercraft with a weapons crate; '67 Vapid Dominator Buggy and a garage in Watson Bay; Jason's Safehouse Vehicles (a Dinka Enduro motorcycle and a Crest Kayak); a Ganado Retro Build for Jason's pickup
Weapons2Hawk and Little Morgan revolvers; engraved versions of Jason's Girardi ES9 and Lucia's Klose K17 pistols
Style2Vice City Style (outfits, hairstyles, tattoos); Goodtime Gear (apparel themed on Macca the Gator)
Things to do2PTT Youngin$ Compound raid; Classic Car Collection, a commission from a fixer named Wyman
Businesses that only open with Ultimate5Rideout Customs; Sara's Unisex Salon; Stock 305; Electric Fang Tattoo (over 50 tattoos by the artist collective FAILE); One-Eyed Willie's off-road mod shop
Total16$20.00 / 16 = $1.25 a line

Read it this way: 9 of the 16 lines are things you are handed, 2 are things to do, and 5 are places in the world that stay shut without the Upgrade. Rockstar's heading for those five is plain: "Special Destinations Only Open for Business with the Ultimate Edition."

That last group is where the real value sits, in our view. A car or a pistol skin is a nice extra. Two mod shops, a salon, a clothing store and a tattoo parlor are part of how you spend time in a GTA. If you like to tinker with cars and outfits, Standard closes five doors on you.

The timing argument: you do not need it on day one

Two lines in Rockstar's copy matter more than any single item. The Upgrade is "threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia's story," and the edition comes "with new items uncovered behind each chapter." The Cheetah's livery is there "to punctuate later-stage action."

So the content is not a pile you get at the start. It opens up as the story moves. And Rockstar Support says the Upgrade is sold "at any time." Put those together and there is no rush. You can play Standard, see whether you even visit mod shops, and decide later. On Xbox, Standard ($79.99) plus the Upgrade ($20.00) is $99.99, the same as Ultimate to the cent.

The PlayStation problem

Here is where we break from the simple answer. On Oct 12 2026 the US PlayStation Store listed the Ultimate Edition Upgrade as an add-on, but its price read "Unavailable." Our price by country page found the same in all ten PlayStation regions it checked. No store says why.

We do not think that means the Upgrade will cost more on PlayStation. Nothing official says so. But "Standard now, Upgrade later for $20" is a promise the PlayStation Store has not yet priced. If you are on PS5 and fairly sure you will want the five businesses, buying Ultimate up front is the only route with a known price today. If you are unsure, Standard is still fine; just know you are betting on a price nobody has shown you yet.

The step up around the world

How big the step feels depends on where you buy. These gaps are from our price by country page, read Oct 12 2026.

CountryUltimate minus StandardStep up as share of StandardPer Ultimate line (our sum)
United States$20.0025.0%$1.25
United Kingdom20.00 GBP28.6%1.25 GBP
CanadaCA$30.0027.3%CA$1.88
AustraliaA$30.0023.1%A$1.88
Germany, France20.00 EUR25.0%1.25 EUR
Japan2,480 yen25.3%155 yen
BrazilR$100.0022.2%R$6.25

The UK pays the steepest step, 28.6 percent. Brazil pays the gentlest, 22.2 percent. Everywhere else sits close to a quarter on top. That spread is not big enough to change our verdict anywhere, but UK buyers have the strongest reason to wait and see.

What Ultimate does not get you

  • Nothing online. The listings call GTA VI "a single-player experience," and no online mode, date or price has been announced. Nothing in the Ultimate copy mentions online. Anyone telling you Ultimate items will carry over to a future GTA VI online mode is guessing.
  • Not the GTA+ month. That is a pre-order bonus for digital buyers of either edition, not an Ultimate perk. See pre-order bonuses.
  • Not the Vintage Vice City Pack. That goes to purchases before Nov 20 2026, Standard or Ultimate.
  • Not a box. There is no physical Ultimate. Physical buyers redeem the code, then buy the Upgrade digitally (pre-load and physical copy).

The verdict, by player

This is the desk's call. Disagree on the forum.

You are...Our callWhy
Playing the story once, then moving onStandardMost of the 16 lines are extras, and they unlock across the story anyway
A car and fashion tinkererUltimate, or the Upgrade soon after launchAll five Ultimate-only businesses are about cars or looks: two mod shops, a salon, a clothes store and a tattoo parlor
A completionistUltimateFive places in the world stay closed without it
On Xbox and unsureStandard, then decideStandard plus Upgrade equals Ultimate to the cent
On PlayStation and leaning yesUltimate nowThe Upgrade has no price on the PlayStation Store yet
Buying physicalStandard box, Upgrade later if wantedNo physical Ultimate exists
Buying for the online futureStandardNothing about online is announced; do not pay for a guess
Waiting for a saleStandard before Nov 20You keep the Vintage Vice City Pack, and the Upgrade can wait

Our overall reading: Ultimate is fair value for the people who will use the five businesses, and a $20 souvenir for everyone else. Since Rockstar lets you buy it at any time, the smart move for most is to let the game tell you which one you are.

Trivia

  • The Hawk and Little Morgan revolvers are described as "sourced from the Vercetti Estate," a nod to the 2002 game's Tommy Vercetti.
  • Electric Fang's tattoos are credited to a real artist collective, FAILE, by name in Rockstar's copy.
  • The Xbox copy says "Vice City Style" where Rockstar Support's list says "Vice City Styles."

Sources and method

We read the US Xbox Store, US PlayStation Store and Rockstar Store on Oct 12 2026, with an honest research user agent, and took prices and the Ultimate contents straight from those pages. Non-US gaps come from our price by country page, built from 20 store pages the same day. Rockstar Support's rules come from our fact base (read Oct 11), because the page did not load for us on Oct 12. Sorting, sums and percentages are ours. The verdicts are opinion; no fact here comes from a rumor site or search summary.
