How to Play Every GTA Game Today, Legally

Every GTA game checked against current stores, subscriptions and backward compatibility, with US prices: what you can still buy, and what is gone.

We checked 16 Grand Theft Auto entries against US stores on Oct 11 2026. Ten can be bought and played legally today, GTA VI can only be pre-ordered, and five, all from the top-down and handheld eras, have no current storefront at all. This page lists each game against every legal route we could verify that day: a store listing with a price, a subscription library, or Microsoft's backward compatibility. Each claim carries its source, and we checked each store ourselves.

We do not link or describe emulators, ROM sites or any other unofficial copy. If a game is not sold, this page says so and stops there.

What is counted, and how

"Legal ways" means a route offered by Rockstar or a platform holder: a store listing with a price or a free download, a subscription library, or a platform's official backward compatibility. Old discs and cartridges you already own still work on their own hardware, and we do not list that for each row.

Prices are US list prices on Oct 11 2026, with any sale price and its end date. We checked Steam through its public store data, the Microsoft Store and Nintendo eShop through their product pages, the Apple App Store through Apple's lookup service, Google Play through its listings, and the PlayStation Store, Rockstar Store, GTA+ and Netflix pages in a browser. The PlayStation Store returned "Access Denied" after a few searches. We did not push past that, so for PlayStation we rely on one search for "grand theft auto" and two product pages. The Microsoft backward compatibility list loads through scripts our tools could not read, so we used the Microsoft Store's own listings plus Xbox Wire's announcements.

The count: the table has 16 rows (the two GTA IV episodes share one, as they do on Steam). Five have no route and GTA VI is pre-order only, so 16 - 5 - 1 = 10 are playable today.

Of the 10 playable entries, five are in the GTA+ library in some form: GTA V, GTA Online, the Trilogy, Liberty City Stories and Chinatown Wars.

Three things the table shows

The top-down games, and two handheld ones, are gone. GTA (1997), London, GTA 2 and GTA Advance have no storefront. Steam's store data returns nothing for the old GTA and GTA 2 apps. Vice City Stories, a PSP and PS2 game, has no current listing we could find. That is five games, and four of them are top-down games.

Mobile is the only home of the classic handheld games. Liberty City Stories and Chinatown Wars are not sold on any console store we searched. Both live on as phone apps, and Rockstar's GTA+ page lists them as unlockable with a membership: download the app, choose "Unlock With GTA+", sign in.

Your old copy may already be upgraded. Rockstar's Jun 17 2026 Newswire post said that from Jun 18 2026, owners of any PS4 version or the digital Xbox One version of GTA V can upgrade to the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version at no cost. PC owners get Enhanced for free alongside Legacy, per the Mar 4 2025 post. For the full version history of GTA V, see /library/gta-v-ps5-xbox-series-versions.

What changed in the last five years

The classic PC trilogy is no longer sold on Steam, and Steam's 2008 San Andreas page reads "is no longer available on the Steam store". Rockstar brought the classics back as a $29.99 bundle on its own store, after its Nov 2021 apology (see /library/gta-trilogy-definitive-edition). GTA IV went the other way: in March 2020 the Complete Edition replaced the separate GTA IV and Episodes listings on Steam and is still $19.99. On Xbox, Microsoft's 2017 and 2018 backward compatibility additions still carry GTA IV for sale, while the San Andreas listing shows no price.

Trivia

  • Xbox Wire's 2018 post says owners of the original Xbox San Andreas get upgraded to the Xbox 360 version on Xbox One, though their saves do not transfer.
  • The App Store still sells the 2011 GTA III mobile port at $4.99.
  • Netflix's US games list on Oct 11 2026 includes Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption but no GTA game.
  • Steam's GTA IV page lists the Complete Edition's release as Mar 24 2020.
