GTA VI on PS5, PS5 Pro, Series X and Series S
What Rockstar and each store say about GTA VI on PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X and Series S, what the badges mean, and how Rockstar handled tiers before.
Last checked: Oct 11 2026.
GTA VI is coming to two console families, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and that is where the published detail almost ends. Nobody has published a resolution, a frame rate, a graphics mode or a single difference between Xbox Series X and Series S. What exists is a handful of short labels: "PS5 Pro Enhanced" on the PlayStation Store, "Optimized for Xbox Series X|S" on the Xbox Store, and "Plays Best On PlayStation 5" on Rockstar's site.
This page reads those labels exactly, explains what Sony and Microsoft say each badge means, and sets them beside how Rockstar described console tiers for Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018 and GTA V in 2022. That history is the useful part. It shows where the real per-console details came from last time, and how late.

What is counted, and how
We list only what each page prints, word for word. Badges are explained using Sony's and Microsoft's own definitions, not ours. We make no performance claim for any console, because no Rockstar source makes one. Preview reporters' impressions of how the game looked are left out for the same reason.
The day count for the PS5 Pro is Nov 7 2024 to Nov 19 2026: 2 years plus 12 days, or 742 days.

What each source says, console by console
This is the original table of this page.
| Console | Rockstar Support | rockstargames.com/VI | Store listing | Take-Two filing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | "PlayStation 5" | "Plays Best On" PlayStation 5; Extended Look captured on PS5 | Platform PS5; "1 player"; "Offline play enabled"; "Remote Play supported" | PS5 |
| PlayStation 5 Pro | Not mentioned | Not mentioned | "PS5 Pro Enhanced", no detail | Not mentioned |
| Xbox Series X | Part of "Xbox Series X|S" | Part of "Xbox Series X|S" | "Optimized for Xbox Series X|S"; achievements, presence and cloud saves listed | Xbox Series X|S |
| Xbox Series S | Part of "Xbox Series X|S" | Part of "Xbox Series X|S" | Same listing as Series X; no separate line | Xbox Series X|S |
| PS4, Xbox One | Not listed | Not listed | Not listed | Not listed |
The Xbox listing for GTA VI does not list 4K, HDR, 60 frames per second or ray tracing. The PlayStation listing does not either. That is not evidence the game lacks them. It means no one has claimed them on a store page yet.
What the badges mean, per Sony and Microsoft
PS5 Pro Enhanced. Sony introduced the label with the PS5 Pro, which went on sale Nov 7 2024 at $699.99 in the US. In its Sep 10 2024 announcement, Sony said some games "will be patched with free software updates" to use PS5 Pro features, and that these games "can be identified with a PS5 Pro Enhanced label." Its footnote adds that "PS5 Pro enhanced features will vary by game." So the badge tells you GTA VI does something extra on PS5 Pro compared with a standard PS5. It does not tell you what.
Optimized for Xbox Series X|S. Microsoft says the icon "means the developer has done the extra work to take full advantage of the unique capabilities of Xbox Series X|S." It is one badge for both consoles. It does not separate Series X from Series S, and it is not a promise about any particular frame rate or resolution.
Plays Best On PlayStation 5. This is Rockstar's own line on its GTA VI site. It is marketing wording with no technical claim attached. Sony and Rockstar have not said that the Xbox version is any different.
How Rockstar described console tiers before
Rockstar has faced the same question twice in recent memory: a launch across a base console and a stronger mid-generation model (2018), and a version for both the Series X and the smaller Series S (2022).
| Year and game | Console tiers | What came from Rockstar | What came from Sony or Microsoft | When the details arrived |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2018, Red Dead Redemption 2 | PS4 and PS4 Pro; Xbox One and Xbox One X | No per-console specs in Rockstar's own words that we could find | PlayStation Blog: gameplay trailer "captured entirely from in-game footage on PS4 Pro" (via Push Square, Aug 9 2018). Microsoft's Xbox One X Enhanced list: 4K and HDR (via GamingBolt, Aug 10 2018) | Capture note reported Aug 9 2018, 78 days before the Oct 26 launch |
| 2022, GTA V for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S | PS5; Series X; Series S | Full per-console detail. Fidelity Mode targets 30 FPS, native 4K with ray tracing on PS5 and Series X, upscaled 4K on Series S. Performance Mode targets 60 FPS, upscaled 4K on PS5 and Series X, 1080p on Series S. Performance RT on PS5 and Series X only | Xbox listing today: "Optimized for Xbox Series X|S", 4K Ultra HD, HDR10 | Rockstar Newswire, Mar 4 2022, 11 days before the Mar 15 launch |
| 2026, GTA VI | PS5 and PS5 Pro; Series X and Series S | "Plays Best On" PlayStation 5; Extended Look "Captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5" | "PS5 Pro Enhanced" (PS Store); "Optimized for Xbox Series X|S" (Xbox Store) | No per-console detail as of Oct 11 2026, 39 days before launch |
Two patterns are clear from that table.
The capture line names PlayStation both times. In 2018, Red Dead Redemption 2's gameplay footage was captured on PS4 Pro, and the PlayStation Blog was where that was said. In 2026, Rockstar says GTA VI's Extended Look was captured on PlayStation 5, and its site says the game "Plays Best On" PlayStation 5. Neither line says how the Xbox version runs.
When Rockstar gave the real numbers, it gave them late and in full. The only time Rockstar published modes console by console, it did so 11 days before release and named the Series S separately: 1080p in Performance Mode, upscaled 4K in Fidelity Mode, and no Performance RT. That was for a port of a 2013 game. Whether Rockstar does the same for GTA VI is unknown. If it does, the 2022 precedent puts it in the final two weeks before Nov 19. That is a reading of one past case, not a prediction from Rockstar.
What Series S and PS5 Pro owners can say today
- Series S owners: you are buying the same listing and the same "Optimized for Xbox Series X|S" badge as Series X owners. Rockstar has not said whether the Series S version differs. In 2022 it did differ for GTA V, and Rockstar said so in writing.
- PS5 Pro owners: the game will have some PS5 Pro enhancement, per the store label. Sony's own rule is that enhancements vary by game, so the label alone does not say whether that means resolution, frame rate or something else.
- Standard PS5 owners: Rockstar's only footage statement is about a standard "PlayStation 5", not the Pro.
For editions and prices across both console families, see editions and platforms. For whether any other platform is coming, see the PC release tracker.
RUMOR: console claims

Trivia
- The Mar 4 2022 GTA V post is the most recent Rockstar feature description we found that names the Xbox Series S on its own. GTA VI's pages never do.
- Both GTA V's Series X|S listing and GTA VI's carry the same "Optimized for Xbox Series X|S" badge. Only GTA V's lists 4K Ultra HD and HDR10.
- The PS5 Pro will have been on sale for 742 days when GTA VI launches.
