GTA VI File Size: What Is Known and When

No GTA VI download size is published yet. Where we looked, what Rockstar gave for GTA V and RDR2, and why Nov 12 pre-load is when the real number shows.

Last checked: Oct 11 2026. We will add the real size here, with platform and the time we saw it, as soon as a store or Rockstar page lists one. The likeliest day is Nov 12, when pre-load opens.

The short answer is that nobody outside Rockstar, Sony and Microsoft knows how big GTA VI is. We read every Rockstar and store page that could carry the number, and none does. What we can add is history. Rockstar has published storage figures before, sometimes months ahead and sometimes a week ahead, and those figures show what kind of number to expect and where it will first appear.

What is counted, and how

We count a size as published only when Rockstar, Sony or Microsoft prints it on a page we can open. Social posts, screenshots and outlet guesses go in the rumor table at the end, with their origin.

For earlier games we use Rockstar Support pages first. Where the Rockstar page is gone, we use a contemporary outlet that quoted it and say so. Two kinds of figure appear, and they are not the same thing:

  • Install size: the space the game takes once installed.
  • Requirement: the free space Rockstar tells you to have. On PS4, Red Dead Redemption 2 needed room for unpacking on top of the install, so the requirement was bigger than the install.

Day counts are calendar days. Jul 2 2013 to Sep 17 2013 is 29 + 31 + 17 = 77 days. Oct 18 2018 to Oct 26 2018 is 8 days.

What Rockstar published for earlier games

This is the table only this page has: every storage figure we could trace to Rockstar for its last two big open-world launches, with when it appeared.

Three things stand out.

The number grew more than tenfold in five years. GTA V's console install was about 8GB in 2013. Red Dead Redemption 2's was 99 GB on PS4 and 107 GB on Xbox One in 2018. That is the jump from one console generation to the next. GTA VI is Rockstar's first new open-world game released only on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, a generation later again, so neither figure is a forecast.

Platforms differed, and the requirement was not the install. In 2018 the Xbox One install was 8 GB larger than the PS4 install. Yet a digital PS4 buyer needed more free space, because of the extra 50 GB used during installation. A single "GTA VI is X GB" headline may hide the same kind of split.

Rockstar has not always printed a number. For GTA V's PS5 and Xbox Series X|S release in 2022, pre-load opened seven days before launch (Mar 8 to Mar 15), and Rockstar's pre-load post gave no size. Buyers saw the number on their console when the download began. GTA VI has the same seven-day setup, Nov 12 to Nov 19.

What Nov 12 will show

Pre-load starts at local midnight on Nov 12 for digital pre-orders, and the code-in-box version ships from the same day so its owners can pre-load too. The download is the same for both, because there is no disc. Our pre-load and physical copy page covers that week in detail.

From that moment the size is visible to anyone downloading. It may also appear on the store listings, earlier or at the same time; that is our expectation, not something Rockstar has said. We will fill in this table only from what we see ourselves.

Xbox Series XNot yet publishedn/an/a
Xbox Series SNot yet publishedn/an/a

Rockstar Support's GTA VI page and both store listings name "Xbox Series X|S" as one platform. Neither says whether the two Xbox consoles get downloads of different sizes, so the table keeps them apart until we know.

Practical advice that does not need the number: check your free space on Nov 12, not before, and if your console is close to full, do not delete anything on the strength of a guess. As of Oct 11 2026 the figure was not published, and pre-load opens Nov 12 2026.

RUMOR: file size claims and where they came from

Trivia

  • GTA V on Xbox 360 shipped on two discs. Red Dead Redemption 2 on Xbox One did too, per Rockstar Support. GTA VI ships on none.
  • Rockstar's 2013 install note called GTA V "the largest and most ambitious game we have yet created."
  • The GTA V Enhanced PC version is the only Rockstar requirement we found that demands an SSD.
