IGN's full Rob Nelson interview: GTA VI car theft tools, witness-based police and an optional romance
IGN posted its complete interview with Rockstar North's Rob Nelson. Here is what he told IGN about car theft, police, money, and Jason and Lucia.
On Oct 7 2026, IGN published the full transcript of its interview with Rob Nelson, Head of Development and Co-Studio Head at Rockstar North. IGN's Rachel Weber writes that the talk took place in July at Rockstar North while Nelson played a 30-minute demo of Grand Theft Auto VI. IGN ran highlights in August and has now posted the whole conversation.
In IGN's transcript, Nelson describes several systems:
- Car theft is no longer one button for every car. Some parked cars need tools, such as a key cloner or a slim-jim, that come later in the story. A phone scanner shows whether a car is locked, alarmed or tracked, and what it is worth.
- Police need a witness or an alarm before a crime is reported. Changing outfits, switching cars or splitting Jason and Lucia up lowers police attention.
- A relationship system rewards time spent together, from pool and kayaking to robberies. Nelson tells IGN the romance is optional and brings no gameplay benefit he can think of, but how the relationship goes will shape how the story plays out.
- A separate "Criminal Profile" tracks what kind of criminal you are. Nelson says it is different from the honor system in Red Dead Redemption 2.
- Money matters more than in past GTA games, and parts of the story require players to earn it.
- Snapmatic is in the game, but Jason and Lucia cannot post, because they are "a couple on the run".
Nelson also tells IGN the team has doubled in size, and that "it's still very much Grand Theft Auto."
Why it matters. This is a long, on-record account from a Rockstar North leader of how GTA VI plays. It is IGN's transcript of a demo Rockstar ran, not a Rockstar post, and Nelson says in it that the team is still polishing the game.
What is still unknown. Rockstar has not published these details on its own pages, and a demo build can differ from the finished game. Nelson declined to say more about where the relationship story leads, to avoid spoilers.
