GTA VI pre-load opens Nov 12 at local midnight, and the boxed copy holds a code, not a disc

Rockstar Support's Grand Theft Auto VI page, last updated Aug 18 2026, sets out two things every buyer needs before launch: when the download can start, and what is actually in the box.

Pre-load starts Nov 12 2026 at local midnight, a week before the game launches on Nov 19. The PlayStation Store lists a "7-Day Pre-load." Rockstar's wording is "local midnight." It has not given an exact hour for each platform.

The physical version is a download code in a box. There is no disc. Rockstar says the boxed copy ships from Nov 12 so that physical buyers can pre-load too. The Rockstar Store page says physical versions "will only contain a download code inside the box."

There is also no physical Ultimate Edition. A physical owner who wants the Ultimate content redeems the code first, then buys the $20.00 Ultimate Edition Upgrade digitally.

Two more differences matter for anyone choosing between box and download. The one-month GTA+ pre-order bonus comes with digital pre-orders only; the physical bonus list leaves it out. Both routes get the Vintage Vice City Pack for orders before Nov 20. And codes follow platform rules: PlayStation codes work only on accounts in the region of purchase, while Xbox codes are not region-locked.

Why it matters. A boxed copy no longer means skipping the download. Every buyer needs the storage space and the bandwidth, and pre-load is the way to have the game ready when it unlocks.

What is still unknown. The file size. Rockstar, Rockstar Support and the PlayStation and Xbox listings show no size as of Oct 11 2026. Figures circulating online are unconfirmed, and one widely shared number came from a parody account. The real size will be visible when pre-load opens on Nov 12.
